Hayko Oltaci, with more than 30 years' expertise gained in rug and tapestry ateliers of Istanbul, Strasbourg, Paris and New York, welcomes you to visit him and his staff at his shop at 857 Lexington Avenue, New York City. You will be welcomed with a cup of Turkish Coffee (please don't spill it on the rugs!) and you can learn a lot just by having a casua chat with Mr. Oltaci, who prefers to be called simply Hayko.
This is easily the friendliest place of its kind in New York -- and also one of the most knowledgeable. Hayko is himself a master craftsman who understands oriental rugs and tapestries down to the last stitch. And his many loyal clients over the years say that his absolute integrit and honest dealings also distinguish him.
Hayko works closely with museums nd with serious collectors. But he cherishes the chance to educate and advise people new to the art of appreciating fine rugs and tapestries. Although one of his rugs was sold at auction at Christies for $140,000, many pieces of exceptional quality are surprisingly affordable, for a little as $250.
An interesting point: Virtually all fine rugs actually increase in value, unlike most furnishings. "But you should buy a rug because you fall in love with it," Hayko says.

These pieces are wonderful folk art for use in your home or office.We have a variety of patterns and colors - some colorful and whimsical, some sparse and using undyed wool in brown and ivory.

Gabbeh translates to "long-pile" rug. The people who wove these rugs are from the sub-groups of the Lori and Quasquai tribes in Iran. They are nomadic and use horizontal looms crudely- fashioned and might have literally picked- up "stakes" during the weaving, then resettled to finish the weaving. This can explain the charming irregularities you may encounter in some of the pieces! The rugs are easy to weave and would allow women to make a living while staying close to their families.

The pieces we have selected pre-date 1960.They are less commercial than the modern production of today. Traditionally,the sizes are of a small format, not large room-sized carpets. We have a range of sizes up to 5' x 8'.Traditionally, these rugs were made to be used by the people who wove them with little thought of a western market. Today, these rugs work beautifully in a modern or traditional setting and are sought after by decorators.

Welcome! You have come to the website of HAYKO, one of the top authorities on fine rugs & tapestries in the world. His workshop and showroom at 857 Lexington Avenue (at 65th Street) in New York City contains some of the finest examples of the ancient art of weaving to be found anywhere, in all price ranges from museum quality pieces worth hundreds of thousands, to lovely one-of-a-kind rugs for as little as a few hundred dollars...
You can learn a lot just by having an informal chat with Hayk Oltaci. You may be surprised to learn that despite his friendly, welcoming and low-key manner, Hayko, as he likes to be called, is among the foremost experts of fine rugs and tapestries in the world."Hayko is such a nice guy, it's really hard to realize sometimes that he's a world authority," says one of his long-time clients.
Anyone who has ever visited the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul - that maze of a tent city overflowing with all the riches of the Orient, including finely wrought copper, brass, silks, and of course oriental rugs - will feel right at home in Hayko's cosy atelier.
Up a narrow staircase, through the door, and suddenly you are surrounded not only by an abundance of rugs hanging on all the walls from floor to ceiling; you'll find yourself enveloped in that wonderful aroma of natural wool yarns, a delicious scent that makes you feel almost as if you've been transported to the heart of the ancient section of Istanbul.
The space is divided into two parts of equal size. Toward the front are rugs of all kinds and shapes and sizes, hanging, rolled up, leaning against the walls, and piled on one another.
The back half of the space is a large, pleasant workroom where the skilled weavers are hard at work doing their invisible magic restoring one rug for a museum and another for an American family whose name is a household word.
One of the artisans is a woman of middle age from Tibet, with a warm smile and a few words of English. Nearby are a stunningly beautiful young woman from Afghanistan, and her Armenian friend. Everyone looks up and smiles. Hayko slips easily into their language and back into English, then speaks in French on the telephone, and answers a question in English for a visitor.
When you are here, you feel almost as if you've been away on a wonderful journey, and going back outside into the hustle and bustle of Lexington Avenue and 65th Street is almost a bit of a shock.

Concert for Hayko Fine Rugs and Tapestries to Benefit Unlikely and Beloved Showcase Venue for Roomful of Sky's Top Talent
NEW YORK, New York - June (date sent), 2009 - On Saturday, June 13, 7-10PM, some of the city's top musicians from the Roomful of Sky Records family will gather at the Meta Center at 214 West 29th Street on the 16th floor to support their unlikely and beloved Upper East Side performance venue, Hayko Fine Rugs and Tapestries. Nine acts will play a full night of "living room style" music to raise awareness and funds to support their friend Hayko Oltaci, one of the world's leading authorities on oriental rugs, and ensure the continued prosperity of his business - a carpet restoration, repair and retail shop. Ticket sale proceeds ($15 in advance/$20 at the door - $5 less with student I.D.) and a referral incentive (5% commission for anyone referring a sale) will help Hayko address possible challenging times ahead, as his friends help him prepare to rise above the city's economic downturn and avoid the financial plight plaguing increasing numbers of small business-owners.
When Phil and the Roomful of Sky family considered the city's economic situation and the possible effects on Hayko's operations, they decided to organize to ensure that Hayko's craftsmanship and his arts patronage would continue to thrive despite potential imminent challenges, and the idea for the "Save Hayko's" benefit concert was born. Performers will include accomplished folk/pop singer-songwriter of San Francisco fame, Noe Venable; alternative soul musician Bobby Kane, the male/female duo Kitch, Rich Casella of "guitar wizard" notoriety, bluesy multi-instrumentalist Jason Vitelli; Jessica Lee, edgy vocalist with 5-piece pop band; 5-piece southern blues band Katie Letts, Korean pop star JJ Bang, and Roomful of Sky president and Springsteenesque singer-songwriter Phil Robinson. In keeping with the ambiance of Hayko's shop, Jodi Serota, president of the Meta Center and the Roomful of Sky team have decided to decorate the Meta Center as a Turkish style salon, replete with candles, antique draperies and oriental rugs, as a backdrop for the event performances. All attendees will be automatically entered into a raffle to win an authentic antique Turkish carpet valued at $1,000.
Hayko Fine Rugs and Tapestries, unbeknownst to many urbanites, is transformed in the evenings into one of the city's most unique performance spaces for intimate creative collaboration. Hayko, a Turkish-born Armenian old-world artisan with a special gift for carpet restoration and repair, opened up his space to Roomful of Sky Records president Phil Robinson and his colleagues, for intimate shows and gatherings, after they met at one of Phil's salon-like Culture Circle events three years ago. Hayko, who had evidenced both talent and passion for art and music himself as a youth, recognized an opportunity to support the arts by inviting Phil and his creative community to gather at his store in the evenings, rather than in the rented spaces they were accustomed to using. Delighted to provide a unique venue for the city's burgeoning creative talent to socialize and perform with and for one another, Hayko explains, "the experience of people making music among the oriental rugs and lamps gives a beautiful feeling. I love music; it gives me courage and energy, and I use it to pray." "I am thankful to have such people in my life," Hayko states. "When I came to New York, I did not know the language and had no family here. Then I met Phil and his friends. I knew I wanted to help them, and I knew maybe someday they would help me too.
